29 Mar

Hey folks.

This week on the show we’ll be talking to PEI artist Rose Cousins who is playing tonight at the Lydia’s Loft. Cousins’ music is very much akin to the songwriting of a Neko Case, or a Kathleen Edwards. A heavy focus on her powerful vocals and sharp lyrics make Cousins’ songs a very moving experience. Tickets are $15 at the door. Showtime is 8 pm.

In the second half of the show we will (hopefully) be talking to Winnipeg group Les Jupes. They’re playing tonight at Vangellis. Les Jupes make strong anthemic rock tunes, with the insistent vocals of Mike Petcau leading the arrangements. Songs like “Myth #3 (The Mountain)” bring to mind The National in the Alligator era.

15 Mar

Hey folks. Getting busier all the time around here. Schools winding up and the hunt for summer jobs begins, anyone? Little help?

Anyway, I still managed to put together a fine show for you. Complete with all manner of Canadian jams and some other fun shit. Enough of this.

Chiddy Bang serves Breakfast

  Chiddy Bang – Breakfast

Chiddy Bang is one of the many groups that has profited from the rise of the Internet music community. It’s hard to believe that in a world before the ease of access provided by youtube, twitter, torrenting clients, etc. two young men from Philadelphia could have become international sensations before they had even released an album. These two have made the Internet work for them. By saturating the market with mixtapes, remixes and videos, they became a sensation before anyone had really even seen what they could do.

The difficult distinction is whether or not their early success is legitimate, or if they — like so many other contemporary artists — had simply built up undeserved hype for themselves only to completely Del Ray the whole thing.

8 Mar

Hey everybody, after noticing a sharp decline in page views, I’ve decided to not be so god damned lazy and actually post a playlist this week. You might even get some quality commentary on the music I picked, but more likely you will get my gut-reactions to music people have spent years perfecting. I don’t get paid for this.

It’s a big week around the old Buzz headquarters, we’re going to be talking to one of the organizers of this year’s ASSU Talent Show at Louis’ Pub (Fri. Mar 9.) We may also have a drop-in live performance by Vancouver band The Oh Wells!, who promise to be upbeat and charming. They’re playing Lydia’s tonight, so go check them out.

What else is new? I did school work this week. That’s a big deal for me.

Playlist after the jump.
